Read Receipts

Your texts with one person, bound as a book.

Read Receipts sets a conversation as a paperback, with chapters, a dedication and page numbers: from Messages on your Mac, or from WhatsApp, Telegram and most other chat apps on this site. Every message is printed as it was sent.

A left-hand page from chapter 1, Team Raptor. Rachel's messages run down the left side and Ross's down the right, about their daughter Emma's drawing of a T. rex in a party hat. A right-hand page opening chapter 2, titled Small. Ross reopens the restaurant from their first date for Valentine's Day, and his line “you're my lobster. you know that” is set in bold.
Pages from a sample book. Rachel made it, so her messages sit on the left and Ross's on the right.

How it works

  1. Choose the person

The Mac app lists your conversations, with how many messages each one holds and how far back it goes. Anywhere else, upload the export your chat app makes.

  2. Choose the stretch

From the first message to last week, or one summer. The page count changes as you move the dates, so you know how thick the book will be.

  3. Make it yours

Give it a title and a dedication, name the chapters, and leave out anything you'd rather not see in print.

  4. Order a copy

Flip through every page before you pay. Then it's printed as a paperback and sent to you, or to them.

For Valentine's Day, order by Monday, January 25 with free shipping, or by Thursday, February 4 with express. After that, give a gift card. It's ready to print as soon as you pay.

The Mac app

These are screens from the real app, reading Ross and Rachel's made-up conversation.

The app's first screen after reading 7,286 messages: a grid of months shaded by how much they talked, a row of moments (Christmas 2024, Valentine's Day 2025, a London trip, a birthday), and cards for who texted first, the first I love you, and the longest streak.
It reads the whole conversation on your Mac and finds the moments: the first message, the first “I love you”, birthdays, trips. Any of them can be a book of its own.
The title and cover step: a large oxblood cover reading You and Ross beside the title field and a grid of nine cover designs.
The title and the cover side by side. Pick a design, make your own, use a photo, or have a picture painted from a few words.
The book's page for a hardcover called My Lobster: its cover, 3,568 messages on 115 pages, an Order button at 98 dollars, and the list of things to add.
The book's own page, with the price as you change it, and the Kindle edition and other extras.
The page view searching for love: 243 matches, each with its date, who sent it and the page it prints on.
Search every message and see the page it lands on. Bold it, leave it out, or pin it to a page.

The app also makes a free Wrapped of any conversation, with cards and a short video of who texted first, your longest streak and the latest night. See the cards.

Find the day it started

Search everything you've sent each other. Start the book on the first message, end it the night you moved in, or put the night he called you his lobster on page 143 if that's your number. Read Receipts adds blank pages before it so it lands there.

Every word where you want it

Let each month be a chapter, or start your own wherever the story turns, emoji and all. Set a word in bold every time it comes up. Write the dedication on its own page. A message you leave out disappears without a gap.

The page that opens chapter 1, titled Team Raptor with a dinosaur emoji. Ross asks whether the museum gala is a tux thing.

On this site

Without a Mac, or for a chat on WhatsApp, upload the export and make the same book here. These screens are the site itself, with the same made-up conversation.

The site's first screen after reading 7,286 messages: the months shaded by how much they talked, the moments on their timeline, and cards for who texted first, the first I love you and the longest streak.
It reads the export and shows what's in it, the same findings the Mac app makes. Try it with Ross and Rachel.
The title and cover step on the site: the oxblood cloth cover beside the title You and Ross, with the nine cover designs drawn with that title.
Every cover is drawn by the same typesetter as the book, with your title on it. Or bring a photo, or have one painted.
Two facing pages of the typeset book, pages 4 and 5 of January 2024, with Rachel's messages on the left of each page and Ross's on the right, and arrows to turn the page.
Turn the real pages, exactly as they'll print, before you order.
The editor, finding love you in 110 messages, each with the page it prints on and ways to leave it out, change it, bold it, start a chapter or pin it to a page.
Find a moment and change how it prints: bold it, leave it out, start a chapter there, or pin it to a page.

Your messages stay on your Mac

Read Receipts reads Messages on your Mac and makes the book there. When you order, we receive the finished book and nothing else from your history. Without a Mac, you can make the book on this site from a chat export: we keep that conversation's messages encrypted while it's made and for 30 days after, then delete them, or sooner if you ask.

Get an email when it's ready

Read Receipts runs on macOS 26 or later. We're printing our own books with it first. Leave your email and we'll write when you can download it.

We'll only email you about Read Receipts. Privacy policy
